Khorobardina Mountain rises above the Kovda River, at the site where saltworks once stood, and now the Solonukha River flows among thick grasses. At the top of the mountain, an elegant church can be seen, which, despite the losses of the 20th century, continues to attract the attention of all who travel along the Vologda highway towards Totma.

The construction of the church in Varnitsy took place in two stages. The lower, winter Nikolskaya church was built between 1743 and 1750 on the site of three wooden churches. The upper, two-light summer church of the Resurrection of Christ was completed between 1772 and 1775 in the style of Totma Baroque. The Totma historian D. A. Grigorov writes that in 1772, at the request of the clergy and parishioners, Bishop Ioann allowed the replacement of the dilapidated wooden church of the Resurrection of Christ with a stone one, located above the warm church of Saint Nicholas with a stone chapel. In the same year, upon a second request from the parishioners, permission was granted to build a stone bell tower above the porch of the warm Nikolskaya church. In 1775, the upper church was consecrated in honor of the Resurrection of Christ.

Subsequent changes to the appearance of the church mainly occurred due to the owners of the nearby salt factory, Kokorev. In 1803, the church was covered with an iron roof, and in 1847, a new spire was added to the bell tower along with crosses on the domes. Many alterations were made to the western side of the church: walls were cut and bricked up, the height of the bell tower was increased, and the building's structure was reinforced. However, these works led to numerous cracks that were not properly addressed. The stamps on the church walls do not differ in the variety of forms but are richly profiled. The cartouches on the bell tower are similar, only larger and arranged vertically. The Empire-style domes are of interest, as there are no analogs among the monuments of Totma Baroque.

During the Soviet era, the spire of the bell tower and the church fence were destroyed, and in the late 1940s, the church suffered from a fire. Later, the building housed repair workshops of the Totma state farm. In the 1990s, attempts were made to restore the church, but the work was limited to erecting scaffolding and partially painting the walls. In 2013-2014, initial conservation work was carried out.
