Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Tuzha

On April 29, 1702, a decree was issued for the construction of a new wooden church in the name of the Resurrection of the Lord. The first church was located on a hill where the House of Culture now stands. It included a bell tower, a porch, as well as warm and cold churches.

Instead of the wooden church, a brick one was built in 1855 and 1876. The bell tower consisted of eight tiers and reached a height of 55 meters. In the upper tier with eight windows were the bells. The large bell hung on a sturdy beam in the center, weighing 205 poods 9 pounds, with a tongue weighing 12 poods. In calm weather, the sound of this bell could be heard from a distance of 10-12 km. In one of the openings was a Saturday bell, also large. Following were the hour bell and other smaller bells.

Behind the bell tower was the porch, and behind it, the warm and cold churches. The main entrance with massive double doors and wide steps covered with iron strips was located on the lower tier of the bell tower. Between the bell tower and the porch were two side entrances, known as the northern and southern doors, smaller in size.

On the porch was the entrance to a tent consisting of two floors. The lower floor housed the watchmen, and the upper floor, the prosphora baker. Here hung an antique clock with a long pendulum, and a rope was run from the hour bell to strike the hours.

The warm church, where services were held in winter, had two altars and two thrones: on the right in honor of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos, on the left, in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

The cold church had three altars: one central and two side altars. It was even more magnificent, with a dome and large windows. Light penetrated not only through the side windows but also from above. The dome was adorned with five domes, the central one having windows, and on its ceiling was depicted the Lord Sabaoth. From this dome hung a chain, from which a three-tiered chandelier was suspended in front of the central altar. The iconostasis of the cold church was stunning, and smaller chandeliers also hung in front of the side altars. Both churches were beautifully decorated.

The splendor of the temple and the services, including the excellent voice of Deacon Shirokshim, the bass of Nikolai Syrtsev, and the choir under the direction of regent Andrei Ivanovich, captivated the parishioners.

The entire structure was surrounded by a church fence with a brick foundation and a wrought iron grille. Part of this grille has survived and now encloses the museum.

During the Soviet era, the church was closed and destroyed in the mid-20th century. The parish was registered in 1991, and believers formed a religious group to petition for the opening of a prayer house in Tuzha. The issue was resolved positively, and believers were allocated the building of the old communication hub, which belonged to Father Mikhail Kurochkin in 1913.

On June 28, 1998, Sunday, under the fourth rector, Father Alexander, the construction of a new stone church of the Resurrection Church began, which continues to this day. Father Alexander tragically died during the construction.

The Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Tuzha was consecrated on August 10, 2008.
