In ancient times, near a spring known as Kolody, a chapel was built in honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh. From it, the first street of the future settlement, named Sergievskaya, began. In 1802, when the construction plan for the district town of Sergach was approved, a square was established here, where it was decided to build a stone church and government buildings. This proximity of the cathedral and official buildings along the main square has been preserved to this day.

This magnificent temple with a blue dome is visible from different parts of the city: from the bypass road and from the villages of Yubileiny and Sakharniy. It could once be heard as well, as a majestic bell tower stood nearby, its ringing echoing for 30 versts around. The grandeur of the cathedral church of the Vladimir Mother of God impresses with its architecture and successful location. Traditions about the participation of ancestors in its construction have been preserved in the families of the indigenous people.

The church was erected a century and a half ago in honor of Russia's victory in the Patriotic War of 1812, as a memorial to the fallen Sergach residents. Construction began in 1817 thanks to the allocation of 37,024 rubles and 50 kopecks by the Commission of Spiritual Schools in 1816. In 1820, the altars were consecrated: the right one in honor of the prophet Elijah, the left one in honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh, and the main one in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God in 1828. By November 1829, Vasily Fedorov prepared detailed reports on the construction.

In the 1930s, the church was closed, and a sewing factory was established in its building. The bell tower was lost. Only 60 years later, in 1993, the cathedral was returned to the Nizhny Novgorod diocese. Since 1994, regular services have resumed in the side chapel in honor of the prophet Elijah.

Active restoration work began in 2003: the central chapel was restored, the floor was repaired using about 40 truckloads of sand, the walls were plastered, whitewashed, and painted, and the altar and iconostasis were updated. In the summer of 2004, the facade was partially renewed. In the autumn of 2005, the dome part of the church was completely renovated: the roof was replaced, a new cupola and cross were installed. In the spring of 2006, major repairs of the facade and the painting of the tent began.
