The wooden Assumption church was built and consecrated in 1744. In the early 19th century, it burned down as a result of a fire. In its place, a new stone Assumption temple was erected in 1827 on Posadskaya Street, near the embankment. The funds for its construction were collected by the parishioners. The church could accommodate up to 1500 people, its width was 14 meters, and its height with the dome and cross reached 23.5 meters.

A special role in the life of the Assumption temple was played by the church elder Vasily Ivanovich Klimushin, a well-known merchant and philanthropist from Stavropol, who donated funds for the decoration of the temple and the acquisition of church utensils.

In 1872, a church parish guardianship was established at the temple, which included 20 people. In 1906, the guardianship collected 460 rubles, of which 410 rubles were directed to charity. In 1921, all the valuables of the temple were seized allegedly to help the starving, and the temple was closed. In 1930, all the bells were removed from it. In 1955, during the relocation of the city due to flooding, the temple was completely dismantled.
