The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an active Orthodox church in the village of Bortsurmany, is part of the Pilninsky deanery of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese. The stone church was completed in 1785. In the late 19th century, a right chapel was added in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and in the early 20th century, a left chapel in the name of St. John Chrysostom.

In 1913, a commission from the Nizhny Novgorod spiritual consistory arrived in the village to investigate reports of miracles associated with Father Alexy of Bortsurmany. The miracles were confirmed, but the canonization of the saint did not take place due to World War I and the October Revolution. In the summer of 1918, Father Mikhail Voskresensky, who had served in Bortsurmany since 1910, was killed. In 2000, he was glorified as a hieromartyr at the Jubilee Archpastoral Council.

In 1934, the church was closed. After that, a club was placed in the chapel of St. John Chrysostom, while the other premises were used as a collective farm warehouse, and eventually the entire building became a warehouse.

In 1989, a parish was opened, and services were held in a prayer house set up in a production facility. The church was re-consecrated on August 17, 1993. By 2006, the central chapel was fully restored. Since August 17, 2000, the relics of the righteous St. Alexy of Bortsurmany have been in the church.
