Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bogorodsk (Ivanovo District)

Фото 1
The Church of the Assumption is located on an elevation near the slope facing the shore, with the altar of the church directed towards it. The layout of the estate is based on two intersecting axes at right angles. The first axis, running from east to west, is a larch alley leading from the main house to a large park. The second axis, oriented north, is a road leading to the economic zone, where the other estate buildings are located, including the utility building, stable, and manager's house. All buildings are made of brick and covered with plaster or whitewash. This is a rare example in the Ivanovo region of a large country estate that has preserved the layout and main structures of the classical era.

The Church of the Assumption is a large estate church in the style of early classicism, distinguished by the monumentality of its forms and the elegance of its facade decor. The head of the church, the bell tower, and the fence have not survived.

The main two-light square, elongated along the north-south axis, is crowned with a powerful octagon. The diagonal faces of the octagon are narrower and end with a faceted drum. The two-light rectangular altar projection, cut at the corners, is flanked by lowered altar and deacon's sections, which are shaped like a quarter circle. The spacious and low refectory is equal in width to the main volume. The side facades are decorated with four-pillar Corinthian porticos of a large order and topped with triangular pediments with white stone cornices featuring modillions. The windows in the first light are arched, in the second, rectangular, and in the main faces of the octagon, round, with smooth framed casings. Under the profiled window sills of the second light are rectangular overlay boards with tassels, decorated with stucco from the early 20th century. The rectangular windows of the refectory are framed with casings with ears and topped with triangular pediments.

The central under-dome space with powerful supports at the corners opens into the altar, refectory, and side chapels through wide openings. It is covered with an eight-section vaulted ceiling, the chapels with barrel vaults, in the altar with a box vault with openings in the corners, and in the two-column refectory with cross vaults. Fragments of stucco cornices dividing the tiers of light and wrought iron grilles in the windows have been preserved.
