The parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Dandenong was founded by immigrants from the Chinese cities of Shanghai and Harbin in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In 1964, the community acquired two plots of land, and in June 1979, construction of the current church began. In January 1986, the church was consecrated by Archbishop Paul Pavlov and Bishop Vasilije Vadić of the Serbian Church in Australia. Today, the parish has over 250 families who regularly attend services.

At the founding meeting on August 14, 1955, the Russian Charitable Society named after Saint Righteous John of Kronstadt was established. It was created in the context of post-war emigration, gradually and with great difficulty. Members of the society assisted with funerals, provided moral and material support to those in need, ensured that elderly people could receive state pensions, and visited the sick in hospitals. In 1968, the first nursing home was built to accommodate a new wave of Russian refugees from China.
