Church of the Holy Trinity in Zhdamirovo

The exact time of the founding of the village of Zhdamirovo is unknown, but it already existed in the 17th century. The central part of the village was the market square, now known as Krasnaya Ploshchad Street. On this square stood a large stone Trinity church with a tall bell tower, built in 1810, which was a true adornment of the village. The bell weighing 5760 kg, hanging in the bell tower, could be heard even in Alatyr. It was rung during holidays and in case of fire or blizzard.

During the Soviet era, the church was closed, and in 1930 it was destroyed. The bricks from the bell tower and parts of the church were used to build buildings for the collective farm, a pigsty, a feed kitchen at the farm, and posts for the cemetery fence. In the summer part of the church, grain was stored at first, and in 1967-1968, the dome was demolished, and the management of the collective farm and the village council were placed there.

In May 1997, work began on the restoration of the Zhdamirovsky temple. Now, with the efforts of the parishioners, a small church has been arranged in the altar part, while the main part of the building remains partially destroyed.

From the former three-part composition of the church, the volume of the two-light cubic quarter with a low five-sided apse has been preserved. The facades are smooth and plastered, divided by paired pilasters into three equal parts with arched windows in two lights. Simple window sills and sandriks above the windows have triangular stepped consoles. The facades are horizontally divided by a smooth inter-floor belt, equal in width to the pilasters. The volumes are topped with simple stepped cornices of later origin.

On the eastern and western facades, arched niches with sandriks were located in the upper corners. Adjacent to the western facade is the refectory under a gable roof, reaching the middle of the quarter in height. Above the refectory rises a small dome on an octagon. The refectory was restored later, its walls made of silicate bricks and plastered.

The edges of the altar are divided by rectangular niches, three of which contain windows with window sills and sandriks; arched niches on the northern and southern edges have remained unchanged. The windows of the first light are located low above the ground.

The interior of the building has been altered, and no traces of decoration or original furnishings have been preserved. The temple was connected to the refectory by an arched opening, and three arches of equal height led to the altar. The vault of the altar was a conch five-section. The building is made of brick, with cross masonry. The walls are plastered on the outside, and the facades are whitewashed. The wooden ceilings, floors, and ceilings, as well as the four-pitched roof of the quarter and the five-sided roof over the apse, are later additions. Decorative metal grilles are installed in the windows, and one of the windows on the southern facade has been converted into a door.

The monument is interesting as an example of a provincial stone cult building, whose volumetric composition traces back to the traditions of 19th-century churches.
