The foundation of the future church was laid in September 1999 under the Metropolitan of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas, Nikolai. However, construction was almost immediately halted for more than six years. With the arrival of a new leader in the Nizhny Novgorod diocese, Archbishop Georgiy, work on the church in Zavolzhye resumed. In July 2003, a public non-profit charitable foundation was established to support the parish of the Church of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity in Zavolzhye. On July 7, 2003, a board of trustees for the foundation was elected at a meeting of the founders. On April 4, 2005, Archbishop Georgiy performed the rite of laying the first stone.

The design of the church, based on the parish church in honor of the Holy Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth, recently built in the village of Diveevo, was significantly revised. The length of the church was increased, and the bell tower, the finishing of the church, and the decoration of the facades were completely changed. The church has two altars: the upper one in honor of the Holy Trinity and the lower one in honor of Tsar Constantine and his mother, Queen Helena. The architectural style of the building is Russian-Byzantine, with a volumetric composition of the 'ship' type.

On December 2, 2006, Archbishop Georgiy consecrated the crosses for the church, and the consecration of the church itself took place on July 10, 2007.
