Trinity Church in Vyazniki

Фото 1
On the site of the ancient city of Yarapolch, the predecessor of modern Vyazniki, hastily built huts reappeared in the early 18th century. Over time, these few structures came to be called the Yarapolchanskaya Sloboda, and later simply Yarapol. Even the construction of the stone Trinity Church between 1756 and 1761 on the site of an old wooden temple did not restore Yarapol to its former significance. The archaic forms of the church may be misleading. It is hard to imagine that at a time when Rastrelli was erecting the Winter Palace and Russian Baroque was already beginning to fade, such a traditional structure emerged. The pillarless temple with three apses and five domes, with a typical refectory, massive and little differentiated, resembles the Epiphany Church in Mstera. It retains local features of cult buildings. In the Trinity Church, as in the Mstera church, all five drums are deaf and serve only a symbolic role. Traces of ancient painting have survived in the zakomaras. Bright spots of primitive painting adorned the zakomaras of both the Epiphany Church in Mstera and the Annunciation Cathedral in Gorokhovets. Changes in Russian architecture of the 18th century are felt only in details, in the loss of decorative principles of ancient Russian architecture and the craftsmanship of brick processing. The bell tower of the Trinity Church makes a stronger impression. Its forms are closer to the works of the 17th century, and its composition and proportions resemble the bell towers of Gorokhovets. Climbing the steep steps of the narrow inner passage and admiring the view through the arched openings of the stone tent, it is hard to believe that this structure was begun almost fifty years later than the Peter and Paul Cathedral bell tower in St. Petersburg. The Trinity bell tower is beautifully integrated into the urban environment, occupying the highest point of the Yarapolchanskaya Sloboda. The Vyazniki campanile, slender and dynamic, magnificently completes the silhouette of Minin Hill of ancient Yarapolch.
