Trinity Church in Verkhoshizhemye

Фото 1
The construction of the stone church began in 1790, as the wooden building of the old church had fallen into disrepair. In the preserved records of the priest, it is noted that due to the frost, it was impossible to hold services in winter. At a community meeting, it was decided to build a stone church. At that time, the duties of the Vyatka provincial architect were performed by F. M. Roslyakov, according to whose designs several churches were built in our area, including Verkhoshizhemye. The Trinity Church in Verkhoshizhemye stands out among Roslyakov's works as a rare example of a rotunda-type church. The construction began with difficulties: the clergyman complained that the master Yarofey Korobov made only 80 thousand bricks instead of 150 thousand and went to work in the neighboring village of Ilgany for a higher pay. They also planned to build a church there, starting a year earlier. Bishop of Vyatka Lavrenty managed through the parish administration to have Yarofey continue working, raising his pay. As a result, by October 1793, the building was completed, and the chapel in honor of the Prophet Elijah was consecrated. The bell tower project was drawn up in 1800, and construction was completed in 1823. Even before all the work was finished, the heads with crosses were gilded. In 1834, parishioners raised funds to recast a 44-pood bell, adding 106 poods of copper to improve the sound. In total, there were 14 bells. Until the mid-19th century, the bell tower stood separately, later it was connected to the church by a passage. The last information about the exterior repairs of the church dates back to 1903. A photograph capturing the raising of the cross likely dates to this time. The cross was installed after the gilding was renewed, and the scaffolding had not yet been removed after the decorative wall repairs. No other historical information about the photograph has been preserved. In 1917, the Trinity Church was nationalized, and two years later, the Soviet government handed it over to the believing residents of the village. Services continued for a short time. My grandfather A. N. Zaytsev recalled: "At the end of summer 1930, the persecution of the church began. The crosses were knocked off the gilded domes. The youth mocked the icons in front of the church fence, splitting them with axes and throwing them into the fire." The bell tower was destroyed, and the wedding of the warm church was demolished. The building was rebuilt, and for fifty years it housed a House of Culture.
