Church of the Holy Trinity in Tuma

Фото 1
In 1823, the first stone of a new church was laid in the village of Tuma. The stone church, built with the funds of parishioners, was completed in 1841. It was erected on marshy land, on the site of an old wooden church, where vertically installed oak logs were poured with metal. Initially, the church had four additional altars dedicated to Archangel Michael, the Protection of the Mother of God, Saint Nicholas, and the prophet Elijah.

In 1851, the eastern part was added, renovated in 1878, and expanded after a fire in 1901. The refectory was updated twice: in 1866 and after the fire in 1901. The bell tower was built in 1863 and restored in 1902. In 1910, the interior of the church was fully painted. The church owned several buildings, including a men's school built in 1885 and reconstructed in 1901, a rectory, nine stone buildings, two rows of wooden benches, a stone pillar on the site of the burned church of 1841, a stone chapel from 1887, and school buildings in several villages. The parish also had wooden chapels, and in the village of Mordvinovo, a stone chapel where services were not held.

The parish included schools in various villages, some of which were located in church buildings and funded by the church. In 1915, 635 boys and 390 girls were educated in these schools. Since 1886, the heads and religious instructors were the rector of the Trinity Church, Archpriest Stefan Ioannovich Ostrooumov, Archpriest Alexander Ioakimovich Sperantov, priests Vasily Fedorovich Gridin and Fedor Ivanovich Dmitrievsky, deacon Ivan Yefimievich Obnovlensky, and teachers, psalmists Alexander Petrovich Sokolov and Grigory Ivanovich Molchanov. In the late 1920s, the church was closed during collectivization, which caused unrest among local residents. In 1940, the Ryazan Regional Executive Committee decided to close the church and convert it into a House of Culture. From 1940 to 1946, the church was used as a grain storage facility. Believers continued to request the reopening of the church until 1947, when a decision was made to reopen it.

The architectural style of the church combines Empire and eclectic elements. The building is 80 meters long and 40 meters wide, with the height of the central dome being 40 meters. The bell tower, made of white stone, reaches a height of 65 meters, and its spire with a cross is about 15 meters, making the total height of the structure approximately 80 meters. The church has five altars dedicated to the Holy Trinity, Archangel Michael, the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, Saint Nicholas of Myra, and the prophet Elijah. The church grounds contain several graves, presumably of priests who served there, as well as a well with clean water. The church building is a cultural heritage monument of Russia.

In 2012, the bell tower was repaired, and in 2013, the domes and towers of the church's chapels were renovated. On November 14, 2014, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the building of the former church school in memory of the holy martyr Matfiy Kasimovsky, Matvey Mikhailovich Ryabtsev, who taught at the school from 1893 to 1895 and served as a psalmist in the church.
