The village of Kandabulak was founded in 1737 by the decree of Empress Anna Ioannovna, which mandated the resettlement of Kalmyks east of the Volga to perform border service on the eastern frontiers. The oversight of the decree's execution was carried out by V. N. Tatishchev.

Later, exiled soldiers began to settle in the village, and in 1781 they built a wooden church in honor of Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica, the patron saint of soldiers.

In 1896, it was decided to build a new stone church with a capacity of up to 1500 people. The project was developed by diocesan architect Khvilinsky, who also supervised the construction.

The church was consecrated in honor of the Holy Trinity in May 1906 and had two chapels, in honor of Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. The old wooden church was dismantled and sold to the village of Orlovka.

In the 1930s, the church was closed and attempts were made to destroy it, but it withstood. Only the bell tower was dismantled, with the bricks used for the construction of a school in Sergievsk, and later the dome was blown off by a hurricane.

For a long time, the church served as a warehouse. In the 1990s, it was returned to the believers, who began its restoration. On November 5, 1997, the first service in several decades was held in the ruined church of Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica in honor of the upcoming feast day.

In the late 2000s, domes were reinstalled on the church, and on December 26, 2000, a solemn liturgy was held, marking its second birth. Restoration work continues.
