The Trinity Church in the village of Izval, built in 1897, had three altars: the main one in honor of the Holy Trinity, as well as in honor of the Three Hierarchs, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom, and the great martyr and healer Panteleimon.

In 1952, the church burned down. According to locals, the fire started during an unusual thunderstorm: a cloud suddenly appeared in the clear sky, thunder roared, lightning struck, and the building ignited like a match. The faithful believe this was God's wrath, as the church had been turned into a storage for vodka.

At the site of the burned church, the parishioners of the Trinity Church from the city of Shakhunya decided to erect a memorial cross. The 3-meter high cross was made by Alexander Petrovich Averin. On September 5, 2004, after the liturgy at the Protection Church, they set off. First, the brothers, and then the sisters walked with the prayer 'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us,' carrying the cross in their hands as a symbol of faith.
