Trinity Church in Chiganak

The village of Chiganak was founded in 1741 and later merged with the village of Blokhino. In 1809, a stone church with a bell tower was built in the village of Blokhino, located in the Balashov district of the Saratov province. The construction of the church was overseen by the owner of the village, Lieutenant Mikhail Blokhin. In 1908, two stone chapels were added to the church; the right one was completed and consecrated by 1912, while the left one was presumably completed in 1913. The church employed a priest and a psalmist, who lived in church houses. A church school also operated in the village.

The village of Chiganak was part of the parish of Blokhino, located half a verst from the village. Over time, as both settlements grew, they merged, and during the Soviet period, this combined settlement became known as Chiganak.

By May 1936, the church had not been functioning for several years. On June 13, 1936, the Presidium of the Rtishchevsky District Executive Committee proposed to the chairman of the Chiganak Village Council to discuss the closure of the church and its further use at a meeting. On September 4, 1939, the same executive committee suggested to the Saratov Regional Executive Committee to use the former church building in the Kalinin collective farm for the construction of a mill. Finally, on February 3, 1941, the Rtishchevsky District Executive Committee decided to close the inactive church in Chiganak and requested the Regional Executive Committee to approve this decision.

Until the early 1990s, the building housed a grain mill. On September 29, 1994, the Administration of the OMO of Rtishchevo and the Rtishchevsky District issued decree No. 603, prohibiting the use of religious buildings as warehouses. The building of the Trinity Church was preserved.

Since 2001, according to the order of the Ministry of Culture of the Saratov Region dated June 19, 2001, the church building has been included in the list of identified objects of historical and cultural heritage of the region.

Currently, the church building is in a state of disrepair; however, experts from the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments believe that its restoration is possible.
