Tolga Icon of the Mother of God Church

Фото 1
The Tolga Church, built in 1761, is a pillarless single-domed structure with a tower-like bell tower and a small northern chapel. In the 1760s, its interior was adorned with frescoes, which were later repainted in oil at the end of the 19th century. A small fragment of the original painting, "The Ascension of John the Merciful," remains on the arch separating the main temple from the refectory, beneath the icon of the Protection of the Mother of God. In the center of the vaulted ceiling is depicted the Almighty, soaring on cherubim. The ceiling also features scenes of the Crucifixion, the Deposition from the Cross, the Kiss of Judas, and the Burial. The painting, executed in the style of dry academicism, is arranged on the walls in two tiers as small panels framed by woven ornamentation. Among the subjects are images of Rostov saints, such as Leontius and Jacob in round medallions, as well as Dmitry and the fool for Christ, John the Merciful. On the ceiling of the refectory are depicted the Appearance of the Icon of the Mother of God to John the Merciful, the Death of John the Merciful, and the Nativity of John the Baptist. In the northern chapel, the ceiling features the Epiphany and the Meeting, while the walls display the Rostov miracle workers. The four-tiered gilded iconostasis of the church, created in the mid-19th century, is adorned with twisted columns and grape clusters, topped with a small cross. The icons, painted in 1770 by the artist Kharkov, include some ancient ones, such as St. Paraskeva Friday from the 16th century, the Tolga Mother of God, and Selected Saints from the 17th century. Ancient icons in carved kiots have been preserved in the main temple, including Nicholas, the Rostov miracle workers, "Do not weep for me, Mother," and the Protection from the 17th century. Near the northern wall is a silver reliquary from the 18th century containing the relics of John the Merciful, adorned with baroque cartouches depicting scenes from his life. Above the reliquary is an 18th-century icon of John the Merciful, depicting him in rags with a staff and scroll, as well as scenes from his life and a Deesis with 20 figures of Rostov and Yaroslavl saints. Above the reliquary is a carved wooden canopy with twisted columns and the monogram I, M from the 18th century. A historically valuable Psalter in Latin, traditionally attributed to John the Merciful, is also present. In 1702, Dmitry of Rostov ordered it to be bound and placed in the grave of Blessed John. Among other items of church utensils, notable are the Saints in a silver cover, made using the cloisonné technique in the late 18th century, and a wooden painted cross from 1706 with the names of the patrons, transferred from the Leontiev Church. In the northern chapel of St. Blasius and John the Baptist, a small 18th-century iconostasis with icons of ancient writing, such as the Guardian Angel and St. Blasius with miracles from the 17th century, has been preserved. In the refectory, in a separate kiot, there is a unique 16th-century icon of St. Basil the Great, unfortunately distorted by later inscriptions.
