Protopriest Aristarch Israeliev, describing the Christmas Monastery, reports that the construction of the Tikhvin Church was initiated after the miraculous healing of the riasophore novice Amphilochia, in the world Ekaterina Grigoryevna Tikhonovskaya, at the Tikhvin Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos. Ekaterina Grigoryevna, the daughter of a merchant from Rostov, entered the monastery on March 29, 1829, and received the name Amphilochia upon her tonsure. She lived in a cell next to the Christmas Cathedral. On July 16, 1838, before the all-night vigil, she fell into a deep sleep, and upon waking from the ringing of the bell, she felt unwell: her body began to sway, her speech was impaired, and later her left arm and part of her right leg became paralyzed. The illness lasted almost a year without improvement, and Amphilochia fell into despair. One day she had a dream in which the abbess, Igumenia Pavla Shatilova, advised her to order a moleben with the blessing of water at the Tikhvin Icon. Amphilochia told this to the abbess, but she did not immediately give her blessing. After repeating the dream three times, with the abbess's blessing, Amphilochia was brought to the church, where Priest Ioann Rzhevsky conducted the moleben. During the prayer over her, the Gospel was read, and then she approached the icon and saw sparks flying from it. The swaying stopped, her speech improved, and soon she fully recovered. Igumenia Pavla, having witnessed this miracle, decided to build a second church in the monastery in honor of the Tikhvin Icon. Preparations for construction began in 1840, and the project was developed by provincial architect Pyotr Yakovlevich Pankov. The church is built in the Russian-Byzantine style, featuring a tall two-light square with five domes. The construction was carried out by peasants from the village of Bratashino, brothers Faddey and Anton Timofeyev, known as the Smolins. The three-tiered iconostasis was created by peasant Alexey Mikhailovich Bychkov, while the icons and paintings were done by Alexander Mikhailovich Kolchin. The church was built with funds from the monastery and donations, the majority of which were contributed by Rostov merchant and philanthropist Maxim Mikhailovich Pleshanov. The consecration took place on September 7, 1847. In 1852, a two-story building with two chapels was added to the church: in honor of St. Nicholas and Great Martyr Barbara and in honor of the Tolga Icon. The iconostases in the chapels are adorned with gilded carvings. In 1899, the chapels were decorated with paintings by icon painter Nikolai Mikhailovich Sofronov, and the gilding of the iconostases was done by Vasily Nikolayevich Moskalev.
