The village of Pavlovo, located near Borisoglebsk on the ancient road from Rostov Veliky to Uglich, is mentioned in the work of historian A. A. Titov "Rostov District of Yaroslavl Province". He recounts that in ancient times, the body of a Christian named Pavel, who was killed by priests for preaching Christianity and tied to a horse's tail, was found at the site of the modern village. Compassionate people took his body and buried it between the Chashnitsky and Vepry lakes.

In 1774, a stone church dedicated to the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God was built in Pavlovo with warm chapels in honor of Cosmas and Damian and John the Baptist, thanks to the efforts of Petersburg merchant Ivan Kondratievich Solntsev. Before this, there was a wooden church in the village in the name of John the Baptist with a chapel of Cosmas and Damian. From this church comes the icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, dated to the 13th century, which is now kept in the Tretyakov Gallery. It was transferred to the museum from the Pavlovsky temple in the 1930s.

From 1937 to 1947, the Tikhvin temple was closed; however, thanks to the activity of parishioners, it avoided looting and desecration. Priest Nikolai Alexandrovich Nemirov was arrested on September 17, 1937, and shot on November 4 of the same year.

Architecturally, the temple is an example of the "provincial" style of the second half of the 18th century, characteristic of Central Russia. It is distinguished by simplicity and conciseness of forms, successful proportions, and striking domes. The bell tower was rebuilt in 1847. In 1881, a zemstvo school opened in the village. Processions were held in memory of "hail damage", "livestock deaths", and "attacks on winter crops by worms". The walls and vaults of the temple are adorned with oil paintings from the mid-19th century in the academic style, which were restored at the end of the 20th century. On the night of May 27 to 28, 2006, lightning struck the bell tower's spire, causing a fire. Local residents noticed the flames and called the rector and firefighters. Although local equipment could not cope with the fire, a heavy rain by morning finally extinguished the smoldering.
