The church dedicated to the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God was built in 1777 with funds from the Arzamas merchant Matvey Stepanovich Maslyonkov. He brought his family's sacred relic, a large icon of the Mother of God "Tikhvin," to this church. In 1787, Maslyonkov also built a warm church at the cemetery in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow." During the Soviet era, the church "Joy of All Who Sorrow" was destroyed, and the church dedicated to the Tikhvin icon was closed in 1931, with its building being used as the city morgue.

In 2001, the church was returned to the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese. Restoration work began in 2004, and services resumed in 2005. On November 7, 2010, Archbishop Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas conducted the consecration of the church.
