Russian emigrants established the community of Saint George the Victorious, but for over ten years, due to the lack of Russian clergy and suitable premises for prayer and gatherings, they were forced to attend the Nikolsky Church.

In 1934, the Russian Orthodox community was officially registered by the authorities as a legal entity, allowing it to purchase land in installments for the construction of its own church. The location chosen was the Santa Teresa district, as all the city's tram lines converged here, and many Russian emigrants lived in this area or nearby. To raise funds, the Russian community of Santa Teresa organized concerts, balls, and theatrical evenings.

The church project, in the style of Pskov churches from the late 13th and early 14th centuries, was developed by engineer Konstantin Trofimov. The period of flourishing church life for the church and community occurred between 1950 and 1963. The choir, led by experienced conductor Boris Kirillov, who arrived from Harbin with his family, at its peak had up to 25 members. The choir not only accompanied the services but also performed concerts in the city and at the Ministry of Culture.

In December 2003, the first major renovation in the church's history began, funded by the Moscow Patriarchate. During the work, the altar and the walls of the iconostasis were finished with white marble, blue granite from the state of Bahia, and a special type of oak.
