The church is located on the grounds of the oldest city medical institution, the D. Ya. Vanykin Emergency Medical Hospital, known for its Tula merchant and philanthropist. He bequeathed his entire fortune to charity, supporting Orthodox churches, shelters, and various city institutions. On March 24, 2012, the church was consecrated in honor of St. John of Kronstadt, who visited Tula on August 27, 1900. The church was built with funds from residents and Tula organizations. Previously, the church was located where the current outpatient clinic building stands on May Day Street.

The church's iconostasis consists of icons printed on paper. One of them, the icon of the Mother of God "Relieve My Sorrows," was gifted to the old church by the city authorities but was irretrievably lost in 1917 when the church was destroyed. Icons on boards have already been ordered and will soon adorn the altar area.
