The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, also known as the "Student Church," belongs to the Bucharest Archdiocese of the Romanian Orthodox Church and serves as a temple for the University of Bucharest. The idea of building a separate church in the capital of Romania was proposed by the ambassador of the Russian Empire, M. I. Girs.

Construction began in 1905 on a site donated by the Romanian government. The cost amounted to 600 thousand gold rubles, of which 195 thousand were allocated by the state treasury. The project, designed in the Russian style, was developed by academician M. T. Preobrazhensky, who also oversaw the construction. The finishing works were carried out by Moscow craftsmen, and the iconostasis was created based on the destroyed iconostasis of the Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles in the Kremlin.

The church was consecrated on November 26 (December 8) 1909 by Metropolitan Athanasius and Bishop Vladimir (Putiata). The parish mainly consisted of staff from the Russian mission. In 1910, after the closure of the Russian mission in Weimar, the clergy was transferred to Bucharest, and the rector became Archpriest Ioann Ioannovich Polistov.

During World War I, before the occupation of Bucharest on December 6, 1916, the church was closed, and valuable items were sent to Iași, then to Petrograd. After the war, the Russian community repaired the church, and services resumed in 1921.

In 1934, the church came under the jurisdiction of the Romanian Orthodox Church and became accessible to students and faculty of the University of Bucharest.

The church is built in the Russian style with seven domes, originally covered in gold. The entrance is located in the northwest corner, and the building has a square shape. The length of the temple is 19.6 meters, the width is 18.4 meters, and the height is 19 meters.

Inside, there is a carved iconostasis covered in gold, presumably modeled after the Church of the Twelve Apostles in the Kremlin, painted by V. M. Vasnetsov. The interior is designed by the artist Vasiliev in the Byzantine style and the style of Athos monasteries, with a total area of painting of 1500 square meters.
