Church of the Meeting of the Lord in Rybinsk

The Sretenensky temple was built between 1868 and 1873 as a winter, warm church as part of the Cross Exaltation complex. The project was developed by the famous St. Petersburg architect M.A. Shchurupov, who created many churches and monasteries. To this day, only four of his churches have survived: in Tokyo, St. Petersburg, on Mount Athos, and in Rybinsk. The Sretenensky church became the first cult building of this talented architect.

The main benefactor for the construction of the church was Alexander, the son of P.A. Pereslavtsev. The church was consecrated on December 16, 1873, and three altars were transferred here from the lower church of the Cross Exaltation church. The main altar was consecrated in honor of the Meeting of the Lord, which gave the church its name. The second altar is dedicated to Saint Abraham of Smolensk, and the third, to the veneration of the honorable chains of the Apostle Peter.

The church is designed in the Byzantine style, with five domes and iron heads covered with green paint, and copper crosses gilded through fire. Initially, the interior decoration was styled after northern Italian churches, but in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the frescoes were replaced with themes in the spirit of V.M. Vasnetsov.

The church has 19 windows with double frames and iron grilles. The basement is equipped with Amosov stoves for heating. An iron spiral staircase leading to the attic and the choir located in the middle dome has been preserved.

The interior of the church was one of the most beautiful in the city. In the altar opposite the throne was an image of the Not-Made-By-Hands Savior, and above the entrance, the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem. On the southern side is depicted the Baptism of the Lord, and on the northern, the Nativity of Christ. The vaults were adorned with images of saints, and the upper part of the dome depicted a blue sky with stars.

On October 16, 1929, the building of the Sretenensky church was transferred to the 10th separate rifle battalion. The crosses were removed, and the icons were given to the city prison for heating. The church, stripped of its domes and decor, was used for a long time as a gym, and then as a vegetable storage.

In the 1980s, the development of a restoration project for the church began. Initially, it was planned to create a base for the restoration site, then a concert hall. Under the guidance of N.N. Usina, the church was painted yellow, although it should be white, like the Lord's church, which changed its appearance.

In May 1995, at the request of Archbishop Mikhail, the church was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. The priest Vitaly Golitsyn became the rector. At the end of the month, the first prayer service was held in a small corner of the church. The first parishioners had to work hard to clear the church of debris. Everyone willing worked: grandmothers, schoolchildren, and soldiers.

The first liturgy took place on July 21, 1995, on the feast day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, marking the beginning of the revival of church life. Services were held in the left chapel until the cold weather, then moved to the basement. They returned upstairs for the feast of the Resurrection of Christ in 1997.

In the fall of 1995, a Sunday school opened in the church, where children study the basics of the Orthodox faith, the Law of God, Church History, local history, Church Slavonic language, as well as engage in singing, modeling, ornamentation, sewing, and embroidery. The school is still operating today.
