Church of the Meeting of the Lord in Gorokhovets

Фото 1
According to historical sources, the first mention of the temple dates back to 1678, when it was still wooden. In 1689, a stone church was built in its place with funds from merchant Semyon Efimovich Ershov. This temple, consecrated in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, was unheated and still exists today. The Church of the Meeting of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God became the central structure of the Sretensky Monastery, located along the longitudinal axis with the Church of Sergius of Radonezh and the bell tower. The church has a three-part division: an apse, a refectory, and the main volume. It is rectangular and elongated along the main axis. The central part of the church is cubic, has two lights, and is high, covered with a four-pitched roof and topped with five domes. On the western side, a one-story refectory with a three-pitched roof and a porch adjoins the main volume. To the east, there are three semicircular apses at the same level as the refectory. The interior volume is covered with a vaulted ceiling and has a light drum. The refectory on the western side is covered with a barrel vault, and the windows are adorned with moldings.

The exterior of the church is particularly exquisite and ornate. The upper part of the walls of the main volume is decorated with decorative kokoshniks, resting on a decorated belt that runs around the entire volume. The corners are adorned with pilasters, and the walls are decorated with an openwork cornice. The window openings, both arched and rectangular, are richly decorated with moldings of various shapes that cut through the surfaces of the walls of the main volume, apses, and refectory. On the lower tier of the longitudinal walls, the window openings do not have such moldings. Entrance to the church is through perspective portals. The domes of the church have an arched-scaled shape, and the drums of the domes are blind, decorated with columns connected by flat arches. The main volume is completed with a square base topped with a spacious five-domed structure. The lower tier of the square base is of ordinary height, while the second is slightly elongated. The decorative design of the drums, the shape, and the three-part apse are characteristic of most churches in Gorokhovets. On the refectory and apse under the cornice, there is an ornament in the shape of the letter 'ж'. The roofing is made of iron, brown in color, and the domes are covered with multicolored scales. Wrought iron grilles are installed on the window openings. The northern portal has a door opening with wooden double doors covered with iron sheets. The doors of the southern and northern portals are metal, double-leaf, secured with straps in the shape of a square. The window moldings are decorated with carved figures. The base of the church is marked by a stripe.
