Church of the Savior of All Merciful in Belozersk

Фото 1
The building of the church is a two-light square, adorned with two rows of decorative kokoshniks and five bulbous domes. It is adjoined by a three-part altar and a two-aisled refectory to the west, as well as a three-tiered tent-shaped bell tower. At the base of the tent is a belt of kokoshniks arranged in a checkerboard pattern and a double frieze made of tiles. The tent itself has rows of decorated openings for sound waves to escape and to prevent cracks. The bell tower housed six bells. Wrought iron ornate crosses adorn the building, and on the lower crossbar of the central cross, the year of installation, 1783, can be seen. The four-pitched roof features five drums with bulbous domes, the central one being lighted, while the others are false. The low three-apsidal altar with a high baroque bell-shaped roof is topped with a small dome.

The chapels of the church are the Andrew, Dmitrievsky, Catherine, and Sretensky chapels. The interior retains remnants of paintings with lush baroque stucco.

The church was consecrated in 1723 and was renovated in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1753, a severe fire occurred in the church, destroying the interior decoration and the iconostasis. In 1755, the church was repaired and acquired its current appearance.

In the 1930s, the church was closed and used for various economic needs, including a gym and a museum. From 1988 until the early 1990s, the restoration team 'Restavros' worked on the church, including draining groundwater from the foundation, restoring window openings, wrought iron grilles, and stone decor, as well as replacing deteriorated tiles.

In 2011 and 2012, as part of the preparations for the city's anniversary, extensive repair and restoration work was carried out, funded by the federal budget. The walls were cleared and plastered, while preserving the stucco and fragments of original frescoes. In August 2012, Archbishop Maximilian of Vologda and Veliky Ustyug held the first service in the Church of the Savior of All Merciful after the restoration.
