Transfiguration Church in Stanilovo

Фото 1
In the village of Stanilovo, the stone church of the Transfiguration, built in the neo-Russian style, attracts special attention. It is one of the interesting buildings in the city, and its history is diverse. Unusually for the city, the oldest part of the church is the bell tower. It is three-tiered, tall, and austere, preserved since 1811. The bell tower has a through passage on the first tier and adjoins the refectory, behind which is the two-light square part of the summer section of the temple with a quadrangular apse. The proportions of the bell tower are successful, and its decorations, such as the engaged columns with abacuses, testify to the good taste and craftsmanship of the builders.

The other parts of the church were built significantly later. The refectory is low, simple, and restrained; its role is secondary, and it merely complements the image of the temple. The main element is the two-light square, crowned with five domes, which became the main field for the architect and stonemasons' experiments.

Particular attention is paid to the northern and southern facades. They are adorned with striking decorative elements: window frames with triangular pediments, kokoshniks, width strips, and columns. All these details harmoniously combine, creating a unique appearance of the monument. The visual center of the facades is the risalits, which occupy almost two-thirds of the wall. From the risalit protrudes a white-stone portico with bulbous columns and an entrance arch supporting the massive masonry. The portico is interesting and resembles the porch of the Church of John the Baptist in Uglich. This porch on bulbous columns is one of the most expressive parts of the temple. The portal of the Transfiguration Church is a descendant of the Uglich porches and demonstrates a vivid connection with the architectural explorations of the late 19th century.

The decor of the Stanilovo church reflects an interest in monumental beginnings and the synthesis of arts characteristic of the late 19th century. This is manifested in the white-stone kiot, reminiscent of a teremok, which crowns the portal, and in the triple window above it with triangular pediments made of red brick and white stone. All these elements reach upward, conveying the dynamics and completeness of the facade.
