The Transfiguration Church of Spas-Verkhoviye is a stone building with two floors and a stone bell tower, built in 1805 with funds from parishioners. Next to it stands another church, a wooden one, about which nothing is known regarding its time and creators. The church is surrounded by a stone fence, and nearby is a cemetery. In the stone temple, there are three altars: on the upper floor in honor of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, on the lower floor, the Nativity of Christ and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. In the wooden church, one altar is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord. A feature of the church is the locally venerated ancient icon of the Mother of God "Smolensk," known as the Polonskaya.
According to legend, an unknown captive, while among non-believers, saw two halves of an icon in the river the day before Easter, which formed the image of the Mother of God. He prayed before the icon, and upon waking, found himself at his church, next to the icon. A stone pillar with the icon of the Smolensk Mother of God now stands at this site. The church is located 85 versts from Kostroma and 40 versts from Galich. The nearest churches are: the Prechenskaya in the village of Gavrilovskoye (1 verst), the Nikolayevskaya in the village of Seltse (4 versts), and the Archangel Church in the village of Alexeyevskoye (7 versts).
The miraculous icon remained in its original place until the mid-20th century. After the loss of the wooden church, the Polonskaya image of the Mother of God was transferred to the stone Smolensk church and placed in the local row of the iconostasis. Since 2002, the Polonskaya icon has been in the John Chrysostom Church in the city of Kostroma.
In the 17th century, the village was part of the Kostroma district, and the parish belonged to the Pleskaya tithe. In 1620, a church "Transfiguration of Christ on the River Shacha" is mentioned. In 1629, there were two wooden churches on the burial site on the River Shacha: the Transfiguration of Spas and the Prophet Elijah. In 1695, the church "Transfiguration of Spas" is mentioned in the Sudislavl tithe. In March 1735, a decree was issued for the construction of a new warm church in the name of the Most Holy Mother of God Odigitria with chapels of the Prophet Elijah and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. In April 1738, the newly built church was consecrated.
