Church of the Transfiguration in Gorodok

Фото 1
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord is a stone structure with three altars: the summer altar is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord, the winter altar to the Smolensk Mother of God, and the third to Saint Nicholas of Myra the Wonderworker. The church was founded in 1783, construction was completed in 1791, and it was consecrated in 1794. The Smolensk chapel was consecrated first, followed by the Transfiguration chapel in 1801, and the Nicholas chapel in 1845. It was built through the efforts and diligence of the parishioners.

To this day, the church has not preserved its original appearance. Changes to the exterior occurred both due to the passage of time and the desire for ecclesiastical beauty. In 1827, it transformed from a single-domed to a five-domed structure, and in 1818 and 1862, extensions were added to the refectory from the western side. Originally covered with shingles, in 1827 and 1833, the dome was covered with sheet iron, and later clad in English tin. In 1904, the domes were remodeled, retaining their previous shape, and covered with high-quality glossy iron, with ornate iron crosses gilded with red gold.

Previously, there were two churches in Gorodok: the Transfiguration Church without a chapel and the Odigitriyevskaya Church with a Nicholas chapel, both wooden. The first was located in the center of the village, while the second was outside its boundaries, to the left of the current stone church. Particularly revered relics include the icon of the Merciful Savior and the icon of the Mother of God "Heal My Sorrows" measuring 16x12 vershoks, painted in 1865 on a pine board lined with cypress. A wooden chapel is located along the large Mologa-Uglich road and was built in the 1850s.
