Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in Timiryazevo

Фото 1
In the eastern part of the region lies a rare example of a gate church, which combines architectural forms from the second half of the 17th century with elements of Baroque decor. The massive two-story square base is pierced at the bottom by two arches of different widths and topped with a convex four-sided roof with a wide eave at the base of a miniature dome. The facade decor has been preserved only on the inner side of the church, while on the outer side it is almost completely lost. The corners of the building are adorned with rusticated pilasters, and the crowning cornice consists of three shelves and belts with small square niches and four-tiered consoles. The walls are divided by an intermediate belt with three steps. In the upper part of all facades, except for the northern one, there are two windows with architraves framed by ornate Baroque moldings. On the western and eastern sides, between the high crowning parts of the moldings, there are framed niches that interrupt the cornice. The arched openings of the gates on the eastern side are decorated with a decorative belt made of two half-rollers, between which runs a row of a curb. The gate passages are covered with barrel vaults with shells of different orientations, and the space of the church above them is closed. A staircase leads to the church, located in the adjacent northern volume of the abbot's house; it is likely that there was a wooden porch here before its construction.
