The construction of the church in Vorotynets began in 1812 and was completed in 1814. It was consecrated with two altars: the main one in honor of the Savior Not Made by Hands and the side altar in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

The Vorotynets church is designed in the style of "provincial classicism," which became widely popular after 1812. Architects from the capitals and provinces developed "model" projects based on which churches were built in district towns and large villages. In the Vasilyevsky district, similar churches appeared almost simultaneously in Vorotynets, Vasilsursk, and Spasskoye. The interior of the church featured stucco, the vault of the narthex and the pendentives were adorned with wall paintings, and half-columns of the Ionic order were placed between the windows, six of which have survived in the altar to this day. The space of the church was complemented by a wooden carved iconostasis, and above the western entrance was a balcony for the choir. The church was surrounded by a wrought iron fence on a brick base and columns with white stone details, as well as a churchyard with a cemetery from the 17th and early 20th centuries.

In 1904, the Vorotynets parish had 1,720 men and 1,893 women. From 1914 until the mid-1930s, the rector of the church was Archpriest Vladimir Vasilyevich Krasovsky.

In 1937, the church in Vorotynets was closed. The building was used as a storage facility for the collective farm, then for the district consumer society. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, reconstruction began: the domes were removed, the bell tower and western porch were demolished, the vault was destroyed, and a second floor was added. In 1967, a district house of culture was opened here.

On Great Wednesday of Passion Week in 1995, the Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands was consecrated. On April 10, 2007, December 23, 2007, and March 30, 2012, the Archbishop of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas, Georgy, conducted episcopal services in the church.
