The cold temple was originally built of wood no later than 1640. In 1678, Stefan Trofimov rebuilt it in wood, but as a three-altar church. In 1691, the temple burned down, and in 1696 it was restored as a single-altar church, but now made of stone. After the fire in 1864, the church was restored to its former appearance, and the altar was consecrated in honor of the Not Made by Hands image of Christ the Savior.

On October 13, 2019, on the eve of the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, the foundation of the Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands was laid on the territory of the Spassky Convent, and the site for its construction was consecrated. On March 1, 2020, work began on the foundation of the Spassky Church. As of June 10, 2020, the pouring of the monolithic walls of the lower church was underway.
