The Savior-Archangel Church, like many other churches in Romanov, was built on the site of previous wooden ones destroyed by fires. Permission to construct the stone church was obtained in 1746. The lower church was consecrated on December 30, 1751, in honor of the Nativity of Christ and Archangel Michael.

The upper, summer church was consecrated in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God only in 1770. For almost a hundred years, the Archangel Church served the Orthodox parish.

After the church schism, most of the residents of Romanov became Old Believers, dividing into those with priests and without priests, but they had no church of their own. In 1854, at the request of local Old Believers, permission was granted to build a wooden church in the name of Martyr Nikifor. In 1855, with the blessing of the Holy Synod, they were given one of the most beautiful churches in the city, the Archangel Church.

In the lower church, on September 29, an altar was consecrated in honor of the Savior of All Mercies, after which the church began to be called the Savior-Archangel Church. Although in 1883 the Archangel altar was abolished due to overcrowding, this name remained in popular memory.

The Savior-Archangel Church is two-storied, with a bell tower added on the west side. Entrance to the winter church is through the lower tier, and to the summer church, via a high staircase through a spacious porch. In the 19th century, the ringing of eleven bells echoed across the surrounding hills.

There was a charitable institution associated with the church.

The Nikifor Church was closed in 1872, and all its property and relics were transferred to the Savior-Archangel Church.

The icon of the Savior of All Mercies, measuring 3 by 4.25 arshins, was especially venerated. It was considered miraculous, adorned with pendants, and resembled the image of the Savior from the Resurrection Cathedral. According to tradition, this relic was acquired in the 17th century by merchant Zhdanov from the Vologda Prilutsky Monastery and transferred to the Savior-Archangel Church.

It was the largest and richest church after the Resurrection Cathedral.

In the 1930s, the church was closed and used as a printing house. The fate of its relics is unknown; most of them were likely lost.

Services in the church are held on feast days. During the procession with the miraculous icon of the Savior from the Resurrection Cathedral, pilgrims stop for rest and meals near the Archangel Church.
