The village of Novo, located by the Kubra River, is 19 versts from the district town and 140 versts from the provincial capital. In the early 17th century, it belonged to various landowners, and from 1654 to 1746, it was recorded in the patriarchal tax books as being owned by the Golokhvastov family. One representative of this family served as a chamber servant to Tsarina Praskovya Fyodorovna.

The church in the village existed as early as the beginning of the 17th century. The tax books of 1628 mention: "the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Novo." These records confirm the existence of the church until 1746. In 1760, a new wooden church was built in the village, also dedicated to Nicholas the Wonderworker.

In 1824, the parishioners were issued a decree for the construction of a stone church, which was built until 1853. In 1861, a warm refectory was added to it, and in 1872, a stone bell tower was erected. The church currently has five altars: in the cold part, in honor of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and the holy equal-to-the-apostles Constantine and Helena; in the warm refectory, in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God and the holy prophet Elijah.

The church is well supplied with utensils, vestments, holy icons, and liturgical books. All church documents are preserved: copies of the metric books have been maintained since 1803, and confession rolls since 1829.
