The stone church with one dome and a bell tower, consecrated in honor of the Smolensk Most Holy Theotokos and Saint Nicholas, was built in 1851 thanks to the efforts of the parishioners. Before that, until 1835, there was a wooden church on this site, which burned down.

Among the particularly revered icons stands out the ancient image of the Savior, which has the inscription: "In the year 7200, in the month of September. The holy image was completed by the promise of Sergey Afanasyev, son of the butcher Shumilov." In the Khmelnyky church, only the canvas antimins from 1700, consecrated by Metropolitan Arseny of Rostov, has survived from ancient items.

This parish holds processions on July 28 and August 25. The church has 36 desyatinas of land, and the parish includes 5 villages.

Previously, Khmelnyky belonged to the Rostov Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, which is why the village is still called Khmelnyky, Spassky. It is likely that the original church was built by the monastery, as there was already a church of Saint Nicholas here in 1720, as confirmed by an inscription in a colored triodion from the 17th century.
