Before the construction of the temple of St. Silouan of Athos in Nova Lyada, there was no church, although it used to be located in the village of Malaya Talinka, which is now part of Nova Lyada. Initially, it was a wooden church. In the early 19th century, Major General I.T. Sazonov, whose estate was nearby, built a new stone church in honor of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, which stood for over a century. During the Soviet era, the church was closed, during the Great Patriotic War it stored grain, and then the church was demolished.

In 2010, it was decided to build a new church in the village of Nova Lyada, the opening of which the parishioners awaited for almost four years. The church was erected quite quickly according to the project of Voronezh architect A.A. Radin, but the interior painting was long undertaken by masters from St. Petersburg. The temple was consecrated in honor of St. Silouan of Athos, one of the outstanding saints of the 20th century, born in Tambov province in 1866. These places are now part of the Lipetsk diocese. From Tambov province, St. Silouan went to the Holy Mountain of Athos, where he prayed for peace for 46 years.

This is the first church in Tambov land dedicated to St. Silouan of Athos, and the first modern church where the paintings are done in the ancient Russian style. The entrance group consists of a thousand brass details. The oak iconostasis, hand-carved in St. Petersburg, adorns the interior. Two mosaic icons, created by masters from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, are a true decoration of the temple. Natural-based paint was used for the painting, creating a fresco effect. The painting is done in an academic style and includes the life story of St. Silouan of Athos, as well as a unique fresco recreated from photographs of a lost Serbian fresco. The dome, made in Volgodonsk, is covered with a nitrotitanium coating, which is more durable than gold leaf.
