According to the order of the Department for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Nizhny Novgorod and the Nizhny Novgorod Region dated April 24, 2000, No. 5-OD, the Sergius Church was recognized as an object of historical and cultural heritage. This temple dates back to 1837. The "Address Calendar of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese" for 1904 states that this is a stone church with altars: the main, cold one, of St. Sergius of Radonezh, and two warm chapels, the right in honor of the prophet Elijah and the left in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

The book “Saint Blessed Sergius and the Nizhny Novgorod Land” mentions that the stone church with a bell tower in honor of Sergius of Radonezh in the village of Buturlino was built in 1837 with funds from the parishioners. Initially, two chapels were consecrated in the refectory in honor of the prophet Elijah and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, while the main altar was consecrated in 1844. Services in the Sergius Church were held only in the warm season, as the building had no stoves. At other times, services took place in the warm refectory, which was divided by a partition into two rooms, creating cramped conditions and inconveniences, especially with the growing number of parishioners.

In addition to the Sergius Church, there was a cemetery church in Buturlino, built in 1815. On the outskirts of the village, there were two cemeteries with small memorial chapels. The Buturlino parish included residents of the village and peasants from neighboring villages Otkosnaya and Filippovaya. In 1911, there were 228 households, 912 men, and 980 women.

In 1937, after the arrest of the last priest, Father Anatoly Evgenievich Tsvetkov, the Sergius Church was closed. During the Great Patriotic War and later, the building housed an elementary school. In 1958 and 1959, the church was converted into a rural House of Culture. In 1992, the Sergius Church in Buturlino was returned to the believers, and restoration work continues to this day.
