Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Podosinovets

Фото 1
The brick two-story church is located in the center of the village, not far from a cliff. In recent years, a massive building of the district House of Culture has been constructed nearby, which has blocked the view of the monument from the main street.

The first wooden Nativity church in the Podosinovskaya volost is mentioned in the land survey books from 1626. The current church, according to clerical records, was built at the request of parishioners in 1824. In the volumetric-spatial composition of the temple, executed in the traditions of Great Russian Baroque, noticeable features of early Classicism can be seen, reflected in the decorative design of the facades and their regular structure. The layout of the church, which represents a variation of the regional type of pillarless tiered church "ship," is more rational and convenient for operation, although it is less picturesque from an architectural and artistic point of view.

The five-sided altar is made as a single block from the ground, which differs from the tradition of stepped apses characteristic of the Ustyug two-story architecture of the 18th century. The bell tower was originally included in the overall volume of the church, which allowed for the absence of a narthex, where the staircase to the second floor was usually located. Unusual for such monuments is the presence of a sloped covered staircase to the upper church, attached to the western end of the building. At the base of the staircase was a chest with a three-sided entrance, and the portal of the lower church was located under the staircase, accessed by two side passages. Currently, the staircase with the chest has not survived.

The lower church, serving as a pedestal, supports the main two-light square with a small light octagon on top, a rectangular refectory with three axes of openings, and the now-lost two-tiered bell tower, distinguished by its slender spire. The decor of the church, executed in a strict style, includes wide pilasters at the corners, framed window surrounds with pediments, and panels. The cornices consist of several rows of overhanging shelves filled with stepped dry bricks. The facades are painted in yellow ochre, highlighting the white stucco decor of garlands, traces of which have been preserved on the pilasters and other architectural details. The church territory was surrounded by a rectangular fence with a recess to the east, built in the first half of the 19th century and corresponding to the style of the church. The fence posts, between which were links of a simple patterned metal grille, had large rustication, a base, and shallow rectangular niches. In the southwest corner was the church watchman's lodge, which gives an idea of the design and layout of the fence.
