Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bogorodsk (Lost)

By the second quarter of the 19th century, there were four churches in the village of Bogorodsk in the Nizhny Novgorod province: the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Resurrection of Christ, the Assumption of the Mother of God, and All Saints. The main church was considered to be the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located at the site where the village, originally called Podoltsy, began to develop.

The history of the church began with a chapel built by an unknown merchant. According to legend, he got lost in the vicinity of Podoltsy and saw an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, after which he was able to safely reach the village. In gratitude for his salvation, the merchant supposedly built a chapel where the miraculous icon was placed. This occurred in the late 16th century. Later, a wooden church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected on the site of the chapel, and the village began to be called Bogoroditsky, then Bogorodsk.

When exactly the wooden church was built is unknown. In the summer of 1791, the church burned down due to a lightning strike, which the residents perceived as divine punishment. Therefore, a new stone church was built by the community from 1791 to 1801. Significant funds for its construction were donated by the landowner Vasily Sergeyevich Sheremetev, the owner of the village. It is suggested that the church bells were cast in Bogorodsk itself, where the Syrovs were engaged in bronze casting, likely exiled here from Moscow in the late 17th century for supporting the Streltsy uprising.

The new white-stone church had three chapels: the central one for the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the right one for the Prophet Elijah, and the left one for St. Basil the Blessed.

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary stood for almost 140 years but was destroyed in the late 1930s by militant atheists. Currently, a cross is installed at the site of the church.
