By 1877, the village of Bolshoye Akashevo was part of the Petrikovskaya volost and served as the center of the Bolshoye Akashevo rural community, which included the villages of Ivanovo, Petrikovo, and Maloye Akashevo. The village had 94 residential houses.

The wooden church in honor of the Beheading of John the Baptist, with an altar dedicated to St. Dimitri of Rostov, was built in 1774. In 1883, a stone three-altar church dedicated to John the Baptist was erected on a hill near the village. A St. Nicholas altar was added to the existing ones. The church had a priest and a psalmist on staff. Since 1875, Father Vasily Trofimovich Trofimov served in Bolshoye Akashevo. In 1883, thanks to the efforts of parishioners, houses for clergy were built on the church estate. The church had a rich library, which contained 400 volumes in 1917. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the psalmists included Fyodor Ivanovich Bulygin, Vasily Mikhailovich Boldyrev, Pavel Ivanovich Zemlyanitsky, who later became a protodeacon, and Parmen Dmitrievich Zinovyev. The name of the prosphora baker Anna Timofeyevna Asakasinskaya is also known.

In 1933, the church of John the Baptist was closed. By order of the authorities, local residents removed the domes and destroyed the bell tower. Nothing is known about the fate of the icons and other church property. Before the Great Patriotic War, the church building housed a school, and later it was used as a collective farm grain storage.

The restoration of the church in honor of the Beheading of John the Baptist began in November 2009. Three parishioners of the Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God from the village of Kuznetsovo in the Medvedev district sought the blessing of Archbishop Ioann of Yoshkar-Ola and Mari El, who supported their initiative.

By the start of the work, the church building was in a deplorable state: the roof and floor were missing, the walls were shabby, the plaster was crumbling, and the remaining frescoes were beyond restoration. However, the vaults were preserved. Work began, and the first benefactors appeared, providing funds and building materials. Gradually, the main part of the roof was closed, where the altars of St. Dimitri of Rostov and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker are located. Since the end of 2010, Father Vasily Yashmolkin, the rector of the Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God from Kuznetsovo, began to conduct services in Akashevo.

Then the builders decided to restore one of the altars of the church, which was better preserved than the others. Thus, the altar of St. Dimitri of Rostov was restored, with most of the icons brought from the Kuznetsovo church, while some were donated by parishioners. The first Divine Liturgy was held on July 7, 2011, on the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist, and the spring was consecrated at that time. The second liturgy took place the same year on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, on which day a dome with a cross was installed. The third Divine Liturgy was performed by Father Vasily on June 6, 2012, on the feast of the Discovery of the Head of John the Baptist, and the cross at the spring in the name of John the Baptist was also consecrated, located five hundred meters from the church.
