Church of the Nativity of Christ in Katsbakhsky

Фото 1
The construction of the Church of the Nativity of Christ began in 1893 on the site of a deciduous forest that was cut down for the erection of the temple and the first houses. The fortified settlement was originally populated by Kalmyk Cossacks, and it was with their donations that the church was built. The location for the temple was chosen so that it could be seen from all edges of the settlement and was near a well, one of the two sources of drinking water. The church was consecrated in 1904 in honor of the Nativity of Christ.

The history of the church is typical for that time: in the 1930s, the last priest, Nikita Dudakov, and the psalmist, Mikhail Rastopchin, were arrested. The bell was removed from the belfry, and the residents tried to keep the icons at home, while the crosses were thrown into the river, and the domes were taken away on carts. During the Soviet years, the building was used as a barn and grain storage. In the 1960s, there were attempts to demolish the church using heavy machinery, but the chairman of the collective farm, Yakov Ladny, managed to defend it. Later, the village club and fire department were housed in the temple.

The return of the church to its original purpose began in the late 1980s, and in 2005 it reopened for parishioners. The opening was timed to coincide with the centenary of the temple.

Even under Catherine II, architects from St. Petersburg developed a project for a church, "wooden on a stone foundation," intended for construction along the Orenburg line. The Katsbakhsky settlement was originally one of the fortresses of the Orenburg province. The church is designed as a two-light single-domed square with a refectory and a tented belfry; the pillar of the temple has the shape of an octagon on a square base. The belfry is built over the narthex. The deciduous log structure, clad in planks, was made without a single nail. Today, the church has preserved its original appearance. It is one of the few surviving wooden churches in the Chelyabinsk region built before the revolution. Due to the fact that architectural changes did not affect the temple, it has been declared a cultural heritage site and a monument of history and culture of the Russian Federation.
