The church dedicated to the Origin of the Honorable Trees of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord was built in the last third of the 17th century and is part of the complex of the former Spaso-Raevsky or Spassky-Raifsky-Kezovsky Monastery. This monastery was founded in the early 17th century by immigrants from Moscow as a male monastery and became a center of active cultural life. Here, the legend of the city of Kitezh was recorded for the first time. Among the historical monuments of the monastery, the synodic stands out, which is now kept in the Russian State Library. The monastery also housed liturgical utensils made in the Armory, as noted in records from the mid-19th century. In 1713, the monastic brotherhood was accused of connections with the Old Believers and was exiled, after which the monastery became female. In 1716, a wooden church of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos was erected, which was rebuilt in stone in 1760. In 1764, with the establishment of monastic states, the monastery was closed, and its churches became parish churches. In 1937, the churches were closed, and workshops of the MTS were placed in them, after which they were abandoned and partially destroyed. Currently, the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Public Organization 'Cultural and Educational Center “Spas-Istok”' is working on a project to restore the monastery.
