The history of the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in the Sofia part of Pushkin is remarkable because it is not only a pre-revolutionary temple but also a defensive structure. In the past, the church shared its roof with a classroom and the armory of the 2nd Rifle Battalion of the Life Guards. It is hard to say if there are similar examples in world history, but this church certainly deserves attention. The temple was built in 1889 at the initiative of Major General Skaryashin, the commander of the battalion at that time. This is not the first building of the church; it originally was located in wooden barracks under the guidance of Prince Anatoly Ivanovich Baryatinsky. Later, the battalion was transferred to Tsarskoye Selo and received new barracks, where the church was recreated on the second floor. The third location became permanent, and Emperor Nicholas II attended the consecration in 1904.

The building was designed by the famous architect Alexander Glebovich Uspensky, and General Sergey Ivanovich Kutepov, the chief builder of the temple part, found peace under its vaults. In the following years, both worship services and military training were held here. During World War I, some fallen soldiers of the battalion were buried in the church. After the Bolsheviks came to power, the temple was closed, it suffered greatly, and completely lost its interiors. From 1972, the building housed a driving school, and at that time, the bell tower was destroyed. Only in 2012 was the building returned to the Orthodox Church, and in 2014, for the first time in almost a hundred years, a worship service was held within its walls. Today, the temple has already been restored.
