The stone church in the village of Nikolo-Shanga, built in 1806 through the efforts of the parishioners, has a stone bell tower and a fence. The cemetery, located half a kilometer from the church, is enclosed by a wooden fence, and there is a wooden prayer house on its territory. The church has three altars: in the cold part, in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord, in the warm part the right altar is dedicated to the Protection of the Holy Virgin, and the left to the venerable Macarius of Unzhensk. The distance to Kostroma is 325 versts, to Vetluga, 80 versts. The nearest churches are in the village of Zubovskoye and the village of Sokolovo, 9 versts away.

The church is named Nikolaevskaya with the permission of the diocesan authorities, in memory of the ancient wooden church that burned down. The main altar in the stone church is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Lord.

According to Belyaev, a wooden church was built in 1785 with altars in honor of Saint Nicholas, the holy martyrs Flora and Lavra, and the holy martyr Paraskeva.
