Transfiguration Church in Lukha

Фото 1
The church is located in the cemetery southwest of the city. It was built in 1797 from brick and covered with lime plaster. Around the cemetery, a stone fence and monumental gates with an attic and a massive pediment, erected in the 19th century in the style of late classicism, have been preserved. This building is one of the most original monuments of provincial cult architecture of the 18th century in the area, reflecting the transition from baroque to classicism.

The architecture of the church, despite some asymmetry, is characterized by integrity and harmony. It consists of two cubic sections: the lower one with side porticoes and the upper one with cut corners, topped with a curved octagonal roof with lucarnes. Above the roof rises another light cubic section, which supports an onion dome. The semicircular apse and the refectory, shifted to the south, have the same height. A three-tiered bell tower adjoins the western side of the refectory. Its lower tier is square and squat, while the two upper cubic sections are pierced by ringing arches. The upper volume of the bell tower has cut corners and is crowned with an octagonal dome with lucarnes and a spire.

The external decor of the church is distinguished by original columned porticoes. On the northern facade, one column is located in the center, while the others are paired on the sides. On the southern facade, one column is to the left of the center, and the missing one is visually compensated by the rounding of the refectory corner. The cut corners of the upper cubic section are decorated with pairs of columns supporting an entablature; this technique is repeated in the upper tier of the bell tower, but here the columns are single. Italian windows are located on the main faces of the upper tier of the temple: the central one is arched, and the side ones are rectangular, framed by small order columns. On the western and eastern walls, the windows are false. The decor of the bell tower includes Tuscan pilasters, grouped in pairs on the flanks.

In the interior, the main volume is connected to the altar and the refectory by wide arches and is covered with a vaulted ceiling with ribs above the lucarnes. In the altar, the vault transitions into a faceted conch, while in the refectory, it is a box vault with ribs. The lighting in the lower part of the temple is weak due to the porticoes shading the windows, but it significantly increases towards the top. Two compositions in plaster frames, painted in oil in the 20th century, have been preserved: "The Nativity of John the Baptist" and "The Assumption."
