Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Zimnitsy

Фото 1
The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, built in 1813, is an Orthodox single-altar warm church and is listed as an architectural monument of the Sursky District in the Ulyanovsk Region.

Currently, the building is in a severely dilapidated state. Fragments of the northern, eastern, and western walls of the square structure have partially survived, as well as the adjoining parts of the altar and refectory walls. The square structure had two tiers of windows, and low arched portals were located in the center of its northern and southern facades. The walls were very thick, made of brick with a complex mortar using iron strip ties, constructed in a cross pattern, and plastered both outside and inside.

The windows were adorned with gentle arching lintels and narrow strip moldings. The corners of the square structure were decorated with smooth pilasters with vertical recesses. The refectory was the same width as the square structure but half its height and was covered with a barrel vault oriented from east to west. The apse was narrower than the church and connected to it through three arched openings without slopes.

The Committee for Cultural Heritage of the Ulyanovsk Region organized a state historical and cultural examination to determine whether this site should be included in the register of historical and cultural monuments. The committee also sent a request to the state archive to search for historical and archival materials about the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin.
