Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Tutayev

Фото 1
The Church of the Intercession is the oldest building in Romanov. It was once the main church of the Novopokrovsky Male Monastery, mentioned since 1674, although it likely originated a bit earlier. In 1771, the monastery was abolished during a church reform. The monastery had wooden walls, near which city trade took place since the 17th century, a tradition that only disappeared a few decades ago. This church houses the famous icon "Mother of God, Increase of Mind," to which people turn for enhancement of intellectual abilities. It is said that frescoes from the 17th century have been preserved in the temple. The church is still active today. While walking around, pay attention to the bell tower, adorned with tiles from the 17th century. Such tiles are often found in Yaroslavl but are almost absent in Tutayev. Researchers associate the love for tiles with Eastern fashion, which Yaroslavl merchants adopted during their travels. The baptized Nogais, being Eastern people, likely showed interest in the tiles. However, 18th-century churches built after the expulsion of the Nogais were intentionally devoid of glazed decoration, possibly in contrast to the Nogais. This church, however, features such decor, suggesting that it was a central cathedral for the baptized Nogais, with their settlement possibly located around it. A mosque likely stood nearby, but not too close. Today, nothing remains of the old buildings in this area. Moreover, the church is positioned at an angle to the street lines, indicating significant changes in the layout of the area.
