The preparation of building materials for the construction of the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the theological school began in the winter of 1894-1895, but the construction was planned to start no earlier than spring. The laying of the first stone in the eastern part took place on June 4, 1896, near the theological school. This event occurred under the guidance of the school's supervisor with the blessing of the Don Archpastor Athanasius and with the support of the local chief, Major General X.V. Ponomarev. The project was developed by the leading architect of the Don Army, P.S. Studenikin, a graduate of the Academy of Arts and a holder of silver medals for participation in competitions. The Intercession Church built according to his design is an interesting example of Russian style in the cult architecture of the Volga-Don interfluve.

The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a cross-shaped form and is topped with a dome on a low wide drum. The altar and refectory are rectangular in shape. All facades are completed with gables, and the corners of the walls of each floor are highlighted by pilasters that transition into decorative bands under the inter-floor and finishing cornices. The decor is executed in the Russian style: eyebrows above the windows, a curb, crosses of various sizes on the upper part, an arched and crenellated band. The artistic expressiveness of the external appearance is largely achieved through the grouping of window openings and their framing. Inside, the church was divided into two floors, and the brickwork was of very high quality.
