The parish of the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in the city of Sengilei, Ulyanovsk region, was registered on February 1, 1993. In April of the same year, by the order of the head of the district administration, a two-story brick building, constructed in 1895, was transferred to the local Christians for the needs of the Russian Orthodox Church. This building was thoroughly reconstructed and adapted for an Orthodox church. The altar was consecrated by episcopal rite on October 21, 2001. By 2005, all construction and finishing works were completed.

Currently, work on the artistic decoration of the church is ongoing. Before the October Revolution of 1917, there was the Intercession Cathedral in the city on the banks of the Volga. In the 1870s, the cathedral was thoroughly restored and expanded with two chapels dedicated to the Ascension of the Lord and the Holy Prophet Elijah. In the 1920s, the last liturgy was held in the cathedral, after which it was looted and desecrated. Later, the building was used by the Soviet authorities for various economic needs. In 1954, the church was completely destroyed, and now its remains rest at the bottom of the Volga reservoir.
