In the early 18th century, the village of Bolshie Polyany belonged to the parish of the village of Shumash. In 1719, a wooden church was built in Polyany in honor of the Epiphany of the Lord, and the village received its own parish. Land was allocated for the church: 15 quarters in the field and 20 hay meadows. The parish included one noble estate and 93 peasant households. Over time, the old church deteriorated and by the end of the 18th century became unsafe. It had to be dismantled, and in 1792 a new church with a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built on this site. After 70 years, in 1864, the church building was significantly expanded and rebuilt. After the 1917 revolution, the village church was completely destroyed. In our days, a new stone church dedicated to the Intercession of the Virgin Mary has been built in Polyany, where services are now regularly held.
