The village of Papulovo, which until 1922 was part of the Knyagininsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod province, is located on the banks of the Sundovik River. Here stands a stone church dedicated to the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in the early 19th century to replace the previous wooden one. The clerical records from 1798 indicate that the old wooden Intercession church was in a dilapidated state, the priest did not have a permanent place, and the sacristy was poor.

The first mention of the stone Intercession church dates back to 1822, when documents noted that the building was constructed in 1816. Later records state that the construction was funded by parishioners and voluntary donors. However, the inventory of church property from 1848 indicates that the church was built with the support of the landowner Yevgraf Borisovich Moiseev and the parishioners. The author of the church's design is unknown, as the project documents have not survived.

By 1816, the refectory part of the church had been erected, where, by the blessing of the Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas Bishop Moisey, Archpriest Timofey Krutovsky consecrated the chapel in honor of the martyr Yevgraf, the heavenly patron of landowner Moiseev. The records from 1916 state that the chapel was consecrated on December 10, 1817.

The main altar of the church was consecrated on October 1, 1827, in honor of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The consecration was led by Archpriest Dormidond Bogoyavlensky with the blessing of Bishop Afanasy Ponomaryov.

In 1937, services ceased due to the arrest and subsequent execution of Priest Ivan Emelyanovich Baryshkin in 1938.

According to the resolution of the Council for the Affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church dated August 21, 1946, the church was reopened on October 19, 1946, when Priest Nikolai Ivanovich Sokolskiy was appointed here. On December 4, 1947, an agreement was signed for the transfer of the church and property to the parish. The church preserved the central iconostasis with 18 icons, totaling 57 icons and necessary church utensils. The church was heated by two stoves, and there were two bells in the bell tower.

Services continued until April 1961, but due to a lack of funds and a decrease in the number of parishioners, they ceased. In 1964, the Executive Committee of the Kstovo District Council decided to convert the church into a rural club, and the church was abandoned.

In 2017, a parish was registered in the village of Papulovo, and services and prayers began to be held in the Intercession church, with restoration work planned.
